PhilaU: A Leader in Community Service PhilaU Named to President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Philadelphia University was named for the first time to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. In its application for the Honor Roll, PhilaU highlighted such community service projects as the Day of Service; Serve 101, a civic engagement course requiring community service that is offered every semester; and Relay for Life, which raised about $100,000 in four years for cancer patient care and research. Volunteers Serve in Fifth Annual Day of Service Students, faculty, staff and alumni headed out to serve the nearby communities in October for Philadelphia University’s fifth annual Day of Service. The campus-wide event gives the University an opportunity to dedicate one day to making a difference in the local community. Volunteers signed up for a wide selection of service projects or created their own. The projects supported a variety of interests and issues, including youth education and mentorship; hunger and homelessness; community development and restoration; animals and the environment; health and special needs; and senior citizen concerns. 80 • Creative City, Creative Campus
