Philadelphia University Highlights 2012-2013

PhilaU Researcher Finds Contaminants in Gummy Vitamins Jeff Ashley, associate professor of chemistry, who has studied the levels of polychlorinated biphenyls—or PCBs, a toxic chemical banned in the U.S. since the mid-1970s—in adult fish oil tablets, recently researched PCB levels in children’s supplements, including gummy vitamins and supplements. The resulting study, published in the journal Food Additives & Contaminants, highlights the analysis of 13 over-the-counter brands of children’s dietary supplements that contain fish oil. Two PhilaU student researchers, Joshua Ward and Christopher Anderson, contributed to the research. Ashley’s research was featured on 6ABC News. 56 • Entrepreneurial DNA
